Naha plans new office building on current site

Date Posted: 2007-07-12

Naha City has a new plan for constructing the new City Hall.

Recognizing the existing building is old and insufficient, Naha City tried unsuccessfully a year ago to build a new City Hall in the Omoromachi area, but the plan was thwarted by high land prices. The city’s Building Council Committee Chairman Moritake Tomikawa, now says the best bet is to build the new City Hall right where the old one is now.

The new plan calls for a 33,000 square meter building, with an underground parking garage capable of handling 260 cars. The design, says Tomikawa, is less expensive than that originally envisioned for Omoromachi, and there is no land purchase expense.

City planners expected to finish design plans by September, then begin demolition next April. Construction is forecast to take until 2010. Those dates will slip a few months, the report to Mayor Takeshi Onaga will state, because of investigations which must take place before the final plan is approved.
