Naha Day celebrated Sunday

Date Posted: 2007-07-11

Dance shows, live concerts and a variety of entertainment venues were prevalent in the prefecture’s capitol city Sunday as Naha City celebrated.
Naha-hi, or Naha Day, was celebrated under auspices of the Tourism Promotion Office to promote the city as a hub for tourism and commerce in the prefecture. Naha Day comes from the numbers 7=Na and 8=ha. Events were staged on Kokusai Street at Tembus Hall in front of Mitsukoshi Department Store. Eisa, Okinawan dance shows and local entertainers took to the stage during the afternoon festivities.
The Okinawa ShortShort Film Festival runs in Naha City at Sakurakaza Theater at the end of the month weekend. The festival begins Friday Jul. 27, at the theater, located behind Tembus Hall. Program Director Chikara Makiya says the Naha Day was a good way to promote the film festival. A short film titled Naha ,by Film Producer Shuhei Fukunaga of Ryukyu Cowboy Films Co. showed the movie for the first time during the Naha Day.
Naha Day was first established seven years ago, but has not been promoted to the public. Sunday was the first time officials actually organized a variety of special events. The establishment of Kokusai Street Transit Mall on Sundays also helped to bring large crowds to the event.
