Governor recovering at home after a stroke

Date Posted: 2007-07-05

One week after suffering a light cerebral infarction, Okinawa’s governor has been released from a local hospital.

Governor Hirokazu Nakaima was admitted to the hospital June 23rd, hours after speaking at Battle of Okinawa memorial ceremonies in Itoman. He was diagnosed as having suffered a mild stroke, but “His senses, talking, nerves and movement are well, now,” one doctor reports. “He will be alright. He will be back to work July 9th.”

“Voters expect me to work hard, and they elected me,” the governor told reporters as he left the hospital in Haebaru over the weekend. “I’m sorry”, he said. He is spending the week at home before returning to work.

The 67-year-old governor had wanted to participate in the Prefecture Assembly’s business meetings which ended Tuesday, “to answer their questions”, but doctors, the Assembly and the vice governor rejected his offer.
