Yakumitsu honey a real sweet deal

Date Posted: 2007-07-05

Jars of pure golden honey line the shelves, luring customers much the same as flowers attract the honey bees.

The two-tone brown and white furniture at Yakumitsu Honpo’s store are accented by the ten different kinds of honey offered by the specialty store located in Plaza House at Okinawa City. The honey tasting counter sits prominently, the sweet odors wafting through the bright store, offered freely to customers along with explanations as to how each differs.

Yakumitsu Honpo’s premier honey is special, being collected from a single flower only. Makoto Agarie, who manages the honey store, explains honey has very special smells and tastes, a part of the reason coming from the flowers which attract the bees. “Honey has a lot of different tastes and qualities, and for those who haven’t tasted our honey, our tasting counter is a perfect starting place.”

He talks of caraway herb honey which tastes almost like brown sugar, a honey perfect for mixing with coffee. Agarie and his staff are meticulous in harvesting the honey. “Most places collect honey in the afternoon, but we do it in the morning when it is very thick,” He explains. “The bees are out all day, then in the nest at night. By morning the bee’s done its work shaking the feathers and steaming out the water from the honey, giving a better taste.”

Caraway honey sells for ¥1,365 for 140 grams, while the another Lychee Honey and Chinese wolfberry Honey sell for ¥1,365 per 140 grams. Customers can sample the honeys in-store, while taking a coffee, tea and snack break.

Yakumitsu Hompo Original Curry and Original Italian Chop Suey are available for ¥840, including fruit salad and dessert. Soba flour pan cake comes with the Curry while French bread is served with Chop Suey.

There are a variety of soba pancakes with raspberry and blueberry toppings, as well as toppings made from honey. Fruit pancakes on the daily menu include Kiwi, papaya, and banana, all served with whipped cream. Coffees and a variety of teas are also served.

Honey is also a part of Nanohana Honey Shampoo and Nanohana Honey Rinse sold for ¥3,150, and Mitsurou bath soup for ¥5,250.

Yakumitsu Honpo is located on the second floor of Plaza House. Take the escalator to the second floor, then turn and walk down the aisle. The store is open daily 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and accepts major credit cards.
