New Kababís branch opening in Chatan

Date Posted: 2003-08-08

Kabab's, one of the most exciting new Indian restaurants on island, is opening the second branch in Chatan on Aug. 10. Since launching their first location in Urasoe City on June 1, Kababís has consistently drawn large crowds from as far away as Kadena Town, Okinawa City and even Yomitan because of the sensational food, relaxed setting and helpful staff.

The menu offers a variety of traditional Indian dishes featuring beef, chicken, prawns, fish and vegetables, and the restaurant also serves a few Kabab's originals, such as Lemon Chicken and Rajar Prawns. One of Kabab's strongest points is its customer service. They have a very friendly staff that can speak both English and Japanese, and they also provide two menus -- one in English and the other in Japanese. You will have no trouble figuring out what you want to order, always a plus with foreign food. Also, all meals can be individualized to meet your requirements, so if you like spicy food, tell the staff. On the other hand, if your palate is incapable of dealing with too fiery spices, let them know; they'll be more than happy to assist you.

Customers have the option of ordering a combo meal or several separate dishes when dining at Kabab's. There are three luncheon sets available: The first costs •800 and includes a choice of either chicken, beef, fish or vegetable curry as well as salad, nan (Indian bread) or rice, and tea or coffee. The second set costs •900 and includes everything in the first set plus tandoori chicken. The third runs •1,000 and comes with everything the first two sets offer plus shish kebab. These three sets are available during dinner hours as well, when the first set costs •1,800 and includes samosa, salad, soup of the day, one chicken, beef, fish, or vegetable selection, nan or rice, lassie, ice cream, and tea or coffee. The second set is priced at •2,000 but substitutes tandoori chicken for samosa. The third set, called Kabab's Special, costs •2,300 and includes the same as the second set plus shish kebab.

The main focus of the staff at Kabab's is to create something new and original from ideas and techniques used in the past. Zakir Md. Khan, the owner of Kabab's, owes his innovativeness and creativity to his background in Italian, French and Indian cuisine. By blending and applying the three together, he has made quite a few unique dishes that cannot be found anywhere else in Okinawa or mainland Japan. His style is perfectly suited to such an internationalized place as Okinawa.

Kabab's Chatan branch is located on the second floor of Obbligato restaurant. Traveling north on Highway 58 Kababís in on the left across froom Camp Lester. There is a green Jomo gas station on the left at the corner of an intersection. Kababís is about 150 meters fortner north from the intersection. The restaurant is open from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for lunch and from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. for dinner. The last order is taken at 10:00 p.m. Closed on Tuesdays. Take-out is available.
