Student ruffians pick fights with other boys

Date Posted: 2007-06-08

At least five boys have been beaten in recent weeks by roaming bands of other high school students in the southern part of Okinawa.

School officials say it appears there are several groups of boys seeking out others for unprovoked attacks. The violence began in April, when a school teacher says one student was attacked by five other boys as he walked on a street near the school.

The most recent attack was May 30th, when five boys took another student to a vacant area of a house near the school and beat him. The abnormal level of violence has school officials concerned. Teachers have held meetings with students and warned everyone about the dangers. Victims are reportedly worried too, and have asked for protection.

The school principal has turned to police for help guarding the school to protect students. A police car is now patrolling the school neighborhood.
