Knife wielding woman attacks San-A clerk

Date Posted: 2007-06-01

A middle aged woman shopping at the San-A Nishihara Branch suddenly went out of control last Friday, pulled a knife and attempted to slash a store clerk.

The incident occurred in the busy women’s department on the second floor, when the 58-year-old woman became agitated and began mumbling. Witnesses say she pulled the knife from behind her back and lunged at a store clerk, cutting her. Moments later, eye witnesses say the woman turned and attacked a 21-year-old woman shopper, sending all customers screaming for security guards.

A guard responded and grabbed the woman, who had also cut herself. “It’s very hard to understand her,” police said after taking her into custody. “We don’t know what she is talking about. She looks like she has a mental problem.”

A police spokesman says the woman claims to be from Nanjo City, where she works as a waitress. After telling them that, he said, she began rambling and making no sense.
