Fast thinking driver foils taxi robberyDate Posted: 2007-06-01 The would-be robber, said to be a young American, pulled a knife on the taxi driver in the Uechi area and demanded money. The demand “Hey! Money! Give me money!” came after the taxi had driven a few meters. The culprit pointed the knife at the driver, who quickly stopped the taxi, opened the door and jumped out. Police say the taxi driver tried grabbing the robber’s arm, but then ran. When the taxi driver returned to his vehicle, the money was still there but the thief was gone. Going to the Nakomomachi Police Box, the taxi driver reported the incident and described the thief as a young man approximately 20~22 years of age, about 175cm tall, and a little chubby. The man was wearing short pants and a tank top at the time of the robbery attempt. Okinawa police are searching for the thief. The incident has renewed calls for guard windows to be placed in taxis between the driver and the back seat. |
