Break out the short sleeves and Bermuda shorts, load up on sunscreen, and welcome the Okinawa warm season with the 2007 Camp Schwab Festival this weekend.

Headlining the entertainment are the Maynard Triplets, who broke into the music scene on the highly popular American Idol television program. They’ll perform both Saturday and Sunday evenings at the Festival, sharing the stage with local bands and entertainers.

The 2007 Camp Schwab Festival opens Saturday at 3pm, running until 10 p.m.

Gates open again Sunday morning, with festival activities online from 1~10 p.m. This year’s festival at the BeachHead parking area is free to the public. The multitude of activities includes game booths, rides, kiddie land, cultural foods and athletic events. There will also be Hawaiian dancers and deejays keeping the music pumping throughout the afternoons and evenings.

This year’s Camp Schwab Festival will feature an open wrestling tournament and an open softball tournament. The Open Friendship Festival Arm Wrestling Tournament takes place Saturday at the Camp Schwab Power Dome. Late registrations will be accepted Saturday from noon to 1:30 p.m. The entry fee is $15. Open to participants island-wide, awards will be given to first, second and third place winners.

The Open Friendship Festival Softball Tournament runs across the two-day event at Camp Schwab’s Softball Field #1. Teams from across the island are expected to participate.

MCCS festival-goers will again find themselves with opportunities to win great prizes and giveaways from sponsors. The “Win Big at the Festival” promotion has two round-trip airline tickets to one of three U.S. destinations on the line, courtesy of United Airlines and Omega World Travel. The sponsors will also give a business class upgrade to another lucky winner. This year’s Festival is sponsored, in part, by Verizon.

The 2007 Camp Schwab Festival is open to everyone island wide. Free shuttle buses will provide transportation to and from designated parking lots on Camp Schwab, and a daiko taxi service will also be available.

Entertainment Saturday starts at 3 p.m., with deejay provided music in between live performances. Nine Lives band plays variety music 5~5:45 p.m., Major Impact serves up pop rock 6:15~7:15 p.m., 8Ball rocks the crowd 7:45~8:30 p.m., and the Maynard Triplets perform country and western tunes, courtesy of Armed Forces Entertainment, from 9~10 p.m.

Tahitian Dancers are first on stage Sunday at 2:30 p.m., followed by the band Major Impact 3:30~4:15 p.m. The classic rock stylings of Sound & Fury are on stage 4:45~5:30 p.m., followed by Major Impact again at 6:45 p.m.

The Maynard Triplets round out the evening with an hour-long performance beginning at 8:15 p.m. The ticket giveaways and commander’s remarks take place 6~6:15 p.m. Deejays will play the music throughout the day, beginning at 1 p.m.
