Date Posted: 2007-05-24

The Kadena USO knows military families are very special, and is hosting a series of events Saturday in honor of Military Family Appreciation Day.

A genuine Hawaiian luau, complete with roasted pig and hula dancers, will take place 2~9 p.m. Saturday outside the Kadena USO Center. It’s open to all SOFA status personnel, and it’s all free.

Inside the USO there will be a ‘Support the Troops’ graffiti banner and card making for those deployed, a cake walk, face painting and Ikebana floral arrangement demonstrations. There will also be guitar and piano demonstrations.

Outside, listen for the live sounds of Storm Watch, as well as deejay-provided entertainment, limbo contests, and food booths from approved private organizations. Clowns, a super slide, a rock wall and a bouncy are among the playtime facilities for kids, and USO personnel will conduct classes on making shi-shi dogs and piñatas.

The USO will use the day to unveil its brand new Mobile USO. The RV has a family room area with large screen television and bench seating, complete with DVD, karaoke, Xbox 350, wireless internet and satellite television capabilities. The USO also has laptop computers available for use.

The back portion of the RV has a kitchenette for food preparations. Another flat panel television is mounted on the vehicle exterior, with an awning to shade patrons.
