Ginowan Police, U.S. Marine Corps team-up for summer safety event

Date Posted: 2007-05-18

The Ginowan City Police Department is partnering with the Marine Corps Bases Japan Safety Office to host a vehicle safety demonstration tomorrow at Camp Foster.

The Ginowan City Police Department will set up its seatbelt convincer, a device which simulates a vehicle crash, and another driving simulator that measures operators’ driving skills. Crowd participants will have a chance to wear specially designed glasses that demonstrate the effects of alcohol and its adverse effect on vision, and one’s ability to operate an automobile.

The demonstration is part of the “Critical Days of Summer,” an annual safety campaign designed to educate U.S. service members, their dependents and co-workers on safety awareness during summertime activities both on and off base. The campaign, which runs through September, includes safety stand-downs within Marine Corps Bases Japan’s units, interactive information fairs and audience participation linked to promotional give-away items.

The Okinawa Prefectural Police and its Joint Motorcycle Demonstration Team, together with the MCBJ Fire Protection Branch and Provost Marshall’s Office, will provide specific demonstrations as part of the campaign. Throughout the campaign, the Marine Corps Bases Japan Safety Office will provide briefings to military service members, addressing topics such as safe driving, water safety, typhoons and inclement weather, and general off-duty recreational safety.
