Tenants abandon Tomarin; Naha City to sell property

Date Posted: 2007-05-11

The financially troubled Tomarin Building in downtown Naha City is on the auction block.

Tomari Wharf Development Company is putting the property up for sale to the general public, as tenants in the sprawling 12-year-old building dump contracts and move out. The building was initially constructed in 1995 through a joint venture by the Prefecture, Naha City and a private company, Tomari Harbor Development. The private company was headed by Yoshiji Tome, vice mayor of Naha City.

Kariyushi Resort Hotel is still operating there, but doesn’t want to pay ¥5,000,000,000 being asked by the city to purchase the Tomarin Building. The resort company has offered ¥2,000,000,000, but Naha City rejected it, sending the land instead to public sale.

Officials say the building has been losing money since being built, with losses in 2006 totaling ¥1,500,000,000.
