Manmade Toyosaki New Town attracting buyers

Date Posted: 2007-05-11

A sales boom is under way in Tomishiro City, where the local government and Okinawa Prefecture have teamed up to create a new community.

Toyosaki New Town went on the books nearly seven years ago, but investor interest was low. Only two companies bought land at the site in 2001, when construction layouts were complete. Three companies signed on in 2002, then only one in 2003. The scales began turning in 2005, when 11 companies decided to get into the action at the site, located near Naha International Airport.

Last year 22 companies committed to the project, and already eight companies have signed land contracts this year. Tomishiro Citys mayor says hes surprised. Its so fast, weve sold much more than we had expected. Its wonderful.

Houmei Kinjo believes Its also the law changes for urban development, which makes it easier now, and the new road in the project is also making it easier to envision the new community.

The initial concept was to make Toyosaki New Town an industrial area with factories, but the Prefecture opted to change the scope to a tourist-oriented business area. Three of the largest overseas resort hotels and Japanese hotels scrambled for prime locations, and others are making inquiries.

Tomishiro Citys Commerce and Tourism Section is going to hire more than 4,000 new local Okinawan workers for the Toyosaki New Town project each year through 2011. The city says its goal is to employ local young people, and to offer resort type work that is appealing.
