Caves under MCAS Futenma may affect construction

Date Posted: 2003-08-08

Large caves and even an underground river beneath the present MCAS Futenma may impact plans for using the land after it reverts to Japanese control. A recent Land and Transport Ministry report says there are many large caves, as well as the underground river in the area, and that raises fears they will obstruct plans for the reutilization of the land after airfield is returned.

The caves were first discovered some years ago, and an initial survey concluded that they stretched under much of the runway. Now officials at the ministry have concluded that more detailed data is necessary to assess condition of the ground, as well as the impact of the caves on future plans for the land once it is returned.
