Quakes, tsunami rumble across southwestern Sakishima Islands

Date Posted: 2007-04-26

A series of three earthquakes rattled through the southwestern island chain that includes Miyako and Ishigaki, causing only minor damage and no injuries.

The first quake struck with a 6.2 force on the open-ended Richter scale roughly 25 miles (40 kilometers) northwest of Miyako. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the three earthquakes, which struck the Sakishima Islands between 9:26 and 11:23 a.m., measured 3 on the 7-point Japanese scale.

The second underwater earthquake, which measured 6.7 on the Richter scale, is believed responsible for a small tsunami. A tsunami advisory was issued, and waves were recorded at 18 inches, about one-half meter high. The third quake tipped the Richter scale at 6.2
