Ishigaki scores big in latest dive survey

Date Posted: 2007-04-26

For a seventh straight year, Ishigaki has won top honors as being the “best diving area” in Japan.

The poll results published at the Marine Diving Fair 2007 showed Ishigaki first, with Okinawa’s main island second and Yonaguni Island third. The Maldives and Palau were recognized as the best international dive destinations. The details were revealed at the biggest resort event in the country at Ikebukuro Sunshine, Toyoshima-ku.

Club Med Kabira on Ishigaki took top honors for a third straight year as “best diving resort” in the country. More than 50,000 visitors are expected to use the facility this year. Manza Beach Hotel and Resort in Onna placed second, while Ishigaki’s ANA Hotel and Resort was third. Okinawa dominated the entire resort list.

Katsuko Asato, Okinawa’s deputy governor, was pleased “Okinawa’s sea has given divers—from beginners to experts—the opportunity to discover our islands. I want divers to come here again and again.” Miss Okinawa, Yoshino Uechi, echoed the comments, saying “I want people to feel the attractiveness of Okinawa, and to enjoy the diving even in winter.”

Okinawa had tourism promotion booths at the fair. Ishigaki, Miyako, Kumezima, Onna-son and Okinawa Tourism Convention Bureau all exhibited awamori, tee shirts and photographs depicting the best of the islands.
