Yomitan protests plans for new waste facility

Date Posted: 2007-04-20

Villagers in Yomitan are vocally protesting plans to build a new industrial waste facility in their backyard.

Yomitan Village has a plan to build the new plant in the Zakimi area, but citizens are demanding it be shelved. “There are senior citizens houses and school children’s food cooking centers near the planned facility,” the protesters say. “We don’t want to have the facility at all.”

Residents gathered over the weekend at Okinawa Christian School to stage their protest. The grounds were filled with 3,000 citizens who wanted the local government to know “we’ll fight until the construction vendors withdraw.” They’ve promised to “never give up”.

Yomitan Village already has a waste facility operated by a private company, but the company says it needs a new one. Community Chairman Masanori Ahagon says there’s no need for another facility.
