Date Posted: 2007-04-20

A second Maritime Self Defense Force sailor has been arrested for illegally possessing secret Aegis defense system information.

The Aegis system developed by the United States is a sophisticated weapons system used by Japan.

The 32-year-old MSDF petty officer second class was charged with violating the law involving Protection of Secrets of the Japan-U.S. Mutual Defense Agreement. He was arrested at his home in Yokusuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, after officials found out hed been given the data by another sailor.

Police earlier arrested a petty officer third class, a 33-year-old sailor assigned to the MSDF destroyer Shirane. The Aegis data included special programs targeted for senior military officers.

Neither petty officer was authorized access to classified documents, and officials say neither had reason to obtain the materials. Police seized computers and other items during the raid.

Authorities say they believe a military officer could be involved in the case.
