English website promotes Japan tourism and culture

Date Posted: 2007-04-20

A quest for more foreign tourists has prompted the Japan National Tourist Organization to turn to the internet.

A new website in English, Korean and Chinese is now up and running, attracting more than 25,000 hits in its first month online. The Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry says the goal is to revitalize local industries by increasing the number of foreign visitors to the country. The new site began operating in early March.

The website spotlights 100 Japan tourist sites, offering background information about festivals, culture and history. Dozens of photographs accent the stories. The web section in Chinese drew more than 8,000 hits. Officials say the traditional Chinese characters, principally used in Taiwan and Hong Kong, were popular with internet viewers.

The website is available at www.jnto.go.jp/tourism/en/
