Stealth fighters have role in joint exercise

Date Posted: 2007-04-14

America’s most sophisticated fighter aircraft, the F-22 Raptor, will participate in mid-month war games in air space near Okinawa.

The stealth fighters, now on their first overseas deployment at Kadena Air Base, will join Japanese Air Self Defense F-15’s and other planes stationed on Okinawa in the joint exercise. The F-22, stealthy to the point of evading radar while staging its attacks, only recently joined the U.S. Air Force arsenal.

The Raptors are stationed at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. They’re capable of both ground attacks and aerial combat, and fulfill a variety of intelligence and electronic countermeasures functions. The JASDF Chief of Staff says “we’re wrapping this up by the end of next week, so we can conduct the joint exercise.” General Toshio Tamogami, speaking to reporters, said the joint exercise will be a test for Japan’s aging F-15 fighters.
