Goya crosswalks delayed a month by construction

Date Posted: 2007-04-06

New diagonal crosswalks at Goya Crossroad in Okinawa City have been pushed back a month.
Officials say the new pedestrian friendly intersection was to have diagonal crosswalks markings in place next month, but nearby construction has pushed back to June those plans. Developers building Koza Music Town adjacent to the intersection are still building the project.

“Construction of the related diagonal crosswalk is almost done,” says the Okinawa General Secretariat, “but we are delaying it’s implementation and introduction until just before the music town opens.” A diagonal crosswalk, by design, turns all traffic lights at the sprawling intersection red at the same time, permitting pedestrians to walk across the intersection in any direction, including diagonally across the streets.

The diagonal crosswalk was designed jointly by Okinawa Prefecture and the city. They’ve been preparing a series of redevelopment plans on facilities, including Koza Music Town and an open cafes area. Officials say they plan to expand the revitalization project all the way through downtown.
