New Expo Aquarium gets new giant resident

Date Posted: 2002-07-25

The new aquarium in the Ocean Expo Memorial Park in Motobu, scheduled to open to public in November, received its largest resident yet when a whale shark was moved into its tank Monday.

The male giant, 4.35 meters long and weighing over 600 kg had been in captivity inside a net off the coast of Yomitan since 1997. Experts at the aquarium say that the shark is still a juvenile and should eventually reach ten to 12 meters in length.

The whale shark was transferred in a special container to its new home. The trip took three hours to complete. The staff at the aquarium said that although the giant seemed a little confused in the beginning, it soon started to swim around as if nothing special had happened.
