Bullets, bomb, pipes are found on Camp Kuwae

Date Posted: 2007-03-22

Chatan Town officials have put the skids on development projects at sites on the former Camp Kuwae after dangerous materials were discovered.

Authorities say magnetic prospecting being done in conjunction with development and construction uncovered old oil pipes, at least 480 bullets and an unexploded bomb. The Naha Defense Facilities Administration Bureau confirmed the discoveries, and says it will conduct a full ground pollution study beginning in July.

The munitions were recovered by explosive ordnance disposal personnel this week, and environmental specialists are studying the site to determine extent of the oil pollution. A major concern is that ground pollution will filter into a buried cultural property, the Heian Yanbaru, nearby.

Authorities say the latest discovery comes in the wake of an earlier uncovering of a fuel tank in the same area some 16 months ago. “I wonder if the government is being diligent about protecting our land,” asks Chatan Mayor Masaharu Noguni. “Chatan is rezoning after withholding approval for a while, but now objects are being found that stop the project. Landowners can’t use their land without anxieties, even after rezoning, so I’m going to complain to the authorities.”
