Treasures mixed within thousands of antiques

Date Posted: 2007-03-22

An antique can be anything from something simply old, to something extremely old and valuable.

Antique lovers on Okinawa—and those curious about what antiques are—get their chance to peruse more than 10,000 items starting next Thursday as the 15th Annual Naha Antique Fair comes to town.

Actually, it’s a semi-annual event, with the coming fair taking place at the Middle Hall of Naha Civic Hall over a three-day period.

Organizers say this fair, commemorating the 15th anniversary of the Naha City Cultural Association, will see prices slashed as an appreciation to antique lovers.

There will be old artificial antiques as well as masterpieces by living national treasures this year. Visitors will find many historical antiques, including hanging scrolls, paintings, pottery, kimonos, old maps and stamps, and articles used in everyday life decades ago. Tsuboya style pottery will be on sale, as well.

The Antiques Fair is open 10am~6pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Admission is ¥200 for adults; elementary and junior high school students are admitted free. There is parking available across from Naha Civic Hall. It is the parking lot of the former Naha Hospital.
