Marine stray bullet lands on pineapple field

Date Posted: 2002-07-25

A stray bullet apparently fired in the Camp Schwab training area landed a couple of feet from a farmer tending his pineapple field in Ikuta, Nago City, Tuesday.

According to press reports, Tetsuo Shimabukuro, a 44-year old farmer heard a noise and noticed a smoke rising from the ground next to him. When investigating, he found a bullet half buried in the soil. His field is about one kilometer from the nearest village, and he says that he often hears gunshots from the training area, but has never before discovered a stray bullet.

A representative of Naha Self Defense Facilities Administration Bureau visited Shimabukuro Tuesday evening to apologize for the incident. A representative of the U.S. Marine Corps also apologized and said that the Marines would halt the training until their investigation into the incident is completed.
