Building consultants to face investigations

Date Posted: 2007-03-16

Building consultants are under investigation by Okinawa Integrated Secretarial as a result of safety concerns.

Officials say the investigation will delve into whether engineering managers are on the job sites at all time, as required by law. Some 131 building consultants are registered in Okinawa, although the Secretarial says itís not required by law. The advantage to being registered comes when the Okinawa Integrated Secretarial makes project selections.

What is required of consultants is that they be responsible for having engineers in place at all times. A prerequisite is that an engineering manager must be assigned to each department, such as sewer department or road department. When several consultants are working the same project, each must provide engineering managers.

The investigation began last month, with questionnaires being sent to each consulting company. Companies which violate the rules are not allowed to register for two years.
