BC Street tries a flea marketDate Posted: 2007-03-16 BC Street, outside Kadena Air Base’s Gate 2, was once the ‘in place’ for virtually everyone; Americans, Okinawans and Japanese gathered to talk, drink and generally have fun getting to know each other. People they met there became friends, and everyone learned different cultures from each other. That’s not the way it is today. It’s a shopping street dotted with bars and restaurants, but it isn’t the BC Street of years gone by. That worries residents, who fear losing the area’s identity. A group of local young people, seven in total, are setting out to change that, and to make a difference on BC Street. All in their 20’s, the seven want to revive BC Street, and their first move is to creat a weekend flea market. The first flea market will be this Saturday, and organizers are hoping to fill 240 booths. The vendor’s fee is only ¥1,000 per booth, and everyone is welcome to set up a booth. To apply, call (098) 921-2738, or email the request to bc-street@mail.goo.ne.jp. There will be street performances, shops and stores are all encouraged to be open, and the BC Street organizers encourage the public to turn out and enjoy the fun. |
