Marine arrested after seven years AWOL

Date Posted: 2002-07-25

Okinawa Prefecture Police arrested an American man on July 2 after he had beaten his girlfriend at a parking lot in Urasoe City on June 30. The girl reported the beating to the police, and they arrested the man when he went to the girlfriend’s apartment two days later.

When questioned the man gave his name as Michael Gomez. When asked to show his passport, the man said that he did not have one. The police then contacted the immigration office that could not find a record of Michael Gomez entering the country.

They finally contacted the U.S. Military Police who identified the man as Michael Neigar, 29. Neigar had been stationed in Camp Kinser in 1995 when he went absent without leave (AWOL). He’s been on the MP’s wanted list ever since, but according to Okinawa Prefectural Police his case was never reported to Japanese authorities. According to investigators Neigar had supported himself during his seven-year escapade by working in temporary jobs as a bar tender and construction laborer.
