Missile data system set for Misawa AB

Date Posted: 2007-03-08

Misawa Air Base in northern Japan, used jointly by American and Japanese military forces, is set to get a new data system to analyze missile launches.

The information processing system is mounted on a vehicle containing three satellite antennas and a sophisticated computer system. The joint tactical ground station will receive and analyze downloaded satellite data monitoring ballistic missile launches in the region. The system can calculate the impact points of incoming missiles, and relay that information to military and defense ministry command posts.

The system in Aomori Prefecture joins a U.S. military X-band radar system assigned to another Air Self Defense Base in Tsugaru. The radar is also designed to enhance ballistic missile defense. The new mobile system will bring an additional 18 American servicemen to the prefecture.
