Dance teams, live bands Naha Salsa No Hi Festival

Date Posted: 2007-03-02

Thirteen dance teams representing salsa bars and studios, the largest number ever, will entertain Sunday at the annual Salsa No Hi Festival.

The full evening festival sponsored by Ryukyu Latino is “the largest event for salsa freaks on Okinawa”. It’s expected to surpass the 1,000 patrons who turned out a year ago. The festival at Namura Hall in Matsuyama, Naha City, opens to the public at 6pm.

Live performances by Alberto Shiroma, lead vocalist of Okinawan Latino Band Diamantis, and Kachimba 1551, will headline the evening stage presentations. Alberto is one of the most popular Okinawan singers in Japan, while Kachimba 1551 is one of the most popular salsa bands in the country.

Expect to be entertained by Okinawa’s top salsa deejays, who’ll be playing not only salsa, but other forms of Latin music including reggaeton, merengue and bachata.

They’re all perfect for dancing, and there’ll be plenty of that, too. Promoter Hiro says he “wants those who even never danced before the festival to join our event, “adding “we have dance lessons for beginners.”

Advanced tickets are available at select salsa bars and studios in Naha and Ginowan Cities. Advance tickets are ¥3,000, which includes one drink. Tickets at the door are ¥3,500. Pick up tickets at Salsatina, 098-868-8286), Bomba Latina (098-863-5028) or Salsa Caliente (098-868-6770) in Naha, or at Latin Soul (098890-0938), El Chevere (090-7384-7596), Studio Claverio (098-893-2399) or Partida (098-898-4851) in Ginowan. Other event information is available at 090-1369-8466.

Namura Hall is easy to get to. From Camp Foster, exit the Commissary Gate, turn left and drive south on Highway 58 to central Naha. Turn right at Matsuyama Intersection when you see the Okinawa Kaiho Bank located on the left. After going one block, you’ll see Namura Hall on your left. The festival is on the second floor.
