Okinawa drivers again win drunk driving title

Date Posted: 2007-03-02

Okinawans are drinking, driving, injuring and killing themselves at triple the rate of the rest of Japan.

For a 12th year straight, Okinawa has put itself at the top of the list, claiming the dubious title of the countryís worst drivers. Okinawa Prefectural Police say drunk driving is involved in 22.9% of all traffic fatalities on the island.

Overall, 226 cases last year were accidents involving injuries or deaths, down 37 cases from 2005. Still, while Okinawa improved by .6%, itís 3.4% average far exceeds the Japanese average of 1.3%. Okinawa registered 66 traffic fatalities caused by drinking and driving last year.

The Prefectural Police say Okinawa drivers are improving, despite the dismal numbers. The numbers of traffic accidents involving alcohol and drivers are down from 30% to 20%, a figure still double the national average.
