Taxi fares to jump ¥50 this summer

Date Posted: 2007-02-23

After more than ten years with taxi fares staying the same, the government has approved a ¥50 raise starting in summer.

The base fare has been ¥450 since 1995, when it inched up ¥10. The new base fare, which has been requested by taxi companies for many years, will be ¥500. Soaring fuel prices have made it difficult for taxi companies to make a profit, and the government says formal approval will come in July, with customers feeling the new prices in August.

The Okinawa General Bureau Office has ok’d the new rates for only 55 of the 114 companies who requested the price hike. They said service from the other 64 companies wasn’t good.

In addition to the base fare increase, distance charges will rise as well. The current rate is ¥450 for the initial 1.8km, followed by ¥60 for each additional 401 meters. Under the new plan, the base will be 1.6km for ¥500, followed by an additional 60 for distances of 310~360 meters. Officials say each taxi company will be able to fix its own rate within the guidelines. For longer distances, the Bureau points out, the fare difference could be significant.
