Date Posted: 2007-02-19

A policeman manning a checkpoint on Highway 221 in Naha City is hospitalized after being struck by an unlicensed teenager avoiding being stopped.

The policeman suffered serious facial injuries and had front teeth knocked out. His injuries are expected to take four weeks to heal. The officer was at a police checkpoint at 1 Chou Me in Naha when the motorbike with two riders approached.

He attempted to stop the 100cc bike, but the 15-year-old driver ran him over. The boy broke his nose in the crash. Officials say he will require several weeks treatment. He was charged with driving without a license.

The youngster riding the back seat of the motorbike fled the scene, but later turned himself in to a police station.
