Nakaima appoints woman as new deputy governor

Date Posted: 2007-02-19

Katsuko Asato is the new Okinawa Prefecture deputy governor for personnel.

Fulfilling a campaign pledge, Governor Hirokazu Nakaima appointed Mrs. Asato to the post, and has reported his decision to the ruling party. Mrs. Asato first declined the post, but reconsidered after a conversation with the governor. Nakaima first proposed her for the post in December at a Prefectural meeting shortly after his election, but delayed the decision after she expressed reservations.

Nakaima thinks highly of Mrs. Asato, and encouraged her to reconsider because of her competence and the need for a woman to represent constituents in his inner circle. He then convinced others in his administration of the importance of Mrs. Asato being a part of the team, and she agreed.

Mrs. Asato, a Nago City native and graduate of Syogyo Zitsumu College, entered Ryukyu Sekiyu (Ryuseki) in 1967. The 59-year-old business woman has been business services department management for many years, and more recently has been both a Ryuseki president and company managing director. She has been vice president since last June.
