Concrete tank shatters, falls in Naha apartment complex

Date Posted: 2007-01-25

A concrete water tank under construction in Naha broke apart Saturday, sending fragments of the giant tank falling on buildings and a car.

The tank on a four-story apartment building was still under construction when it broke into pieces in Nahas Akebono District at 4:30pm Saturday, sending a three-meter long, one-meter wide, one-meter thick chunk crashing through the tin roof of a storehouse. Police said it was a miracle there were no injuries, because a single mistake would have caused very serious consequences. The tank came apart in a residential area.

Other pieces of the concrete tank struck the wall of an adjoining apartment, breaking it. Another piece hit a handrail and knocked a piece of wall down. More of the flying concrete struck and damaged a car parked in a nearby car park. Still other pieces caused cracks in walls or stairs.

A witness said he heard a whomp, boom. There was a big oscillation. Officials credit the lack of damage to the storehouse being empty on a Saturday. If it had been a weekday, police say, it would have been a disaster.
