Manicured nails a must for everyone

By: Paul Felini

As a typical male, I always thought manicures and nail salons were for women.

Men could take care of themselves, and I did the standard things with filing my own.

A few days ago, though, a lady friend took me to task for my coarse nails, and told me I should “be taking care of my looks, so when meeting female clients they have a good impression of you.”

That got my attention, and I asked for advice on a salon to try. My friend said she knew just the one, and I made the appointment. I was told Mimi’s Nails is the place to go, whether you are a man or a woman.

Mui ‘MiMi’ Nelson, owner of MiMi’s Nails, sat me down in a chair to check my nails.

“First we police your nails to get rid of old cuticles,” she told me before instructing an assistant to take care of things. A half-hour later, I must admit my nails looked a lot better. Very good, in fact!

MiMi, a native Vietnamese, moved to Okinawa from North Carolina nearly four years ago, first providing nail services to service personnel and families on the military bases. After deciding she wanted to offer nail services to Okinawans, she opened her salon this month in the Ginowan Isa District, near Wing King Restaurant. Now, she says, “we can serve both Okinawans and Americans.”

The salon owner, together with assistants Nao and Lumi, “keep files on our customers’ nails,” she says. “with the records, we can customize services, which is why I prefer calling my service ‘nail care’ rather than nail salon.”

MiMi’s Nails offers several menus, including an Acrylic Full Set at ¥4,500, a manicure at ¥2,500, a pedicure for ¥3,000 and a Men’s Manicure for only ¥2,000.

As a grand opening feature, MiMi’s is offering free nail art service until the end of March.

Appointments are available by calling (098) 8i97-6366. Getting to MiMi’s Nails is easy. Exit the Camp Foster Commissary Gate and turn left onto Highway 58.

Make a U-Turn at the second traffic light, drive straight until you pass a bus stop, and then turn left. The nail parlor is in an apartment across from Wing King Restaurant.
