Local karate champion announces retirement

Date Posted: 2007-01-19

An Okinawan woman who twice won the All Japan Karate Tournament has removed herself from the competition mat.

Azusa Tomishiro, during 17years in karate competitions beginning with a pair of All Japan High School Karate Tournament wins, has scored All Japan wins in recent years, as well as a victory at the World Karate Tournament in Mexico two years ago.

Tomishiro last competed at the World Championship Games in Finland last October.

“I made up my decision after the tournament there,” Tomishiro said, “because I couldn’t win but did the best of my ability.” She says she has no regrets over her retirement, which became effective January 1st. Her coach, Tsuguo Sakumoto, supports her retirement decision.

Tomishiro says she will now coach kids karate.
