Okinawa winter 2nd warmest on record

Date Posted: 2007-01-12

It’s official. The 2006 Okinawa temperatures were above normal.

The Okinawa Meteorological Observatory reports average temperatures were 0.5-0.8C warmer than normal, making the winter the second warmest since it began keeping records. The higher-than-normal temperatures spanned the Prefecture, with averages of 24.6C in Ishigaki, 24.1C in Iriomote, and 23C at Nago on Okinawa’s main island. Naha City registered 23.5C, and neighboring Kume Island recorded 23.3C records.

Typhoons were somewhat out-of-sync in 2006, with only six approaching Okinawa, one less than the norm. Every one of last year’s typhoons headed to the Miyako and Yaeyama island chains.
