Naha Cops nab drunk taxi driver

Date Posted: 2007-01-12

A seemingly unlikely suspect was apprehended over the weekend for drinking and driving.

Naha Police arrested a taxi driver, Osamu Takamiyagi, as he drove his taxi along side streets near ShiKiNa Gardens early Saturday evening. Police say they found a bottle of awamori, a local Okinawa liquor, in the vehicle.

Takamiyagi was unsteady on his feet, and unable to answer police questions. When attempting to question him, he asked “Who are you? Oh! Police!” The 51-year-old taxi driver was charged with driving while intoxicated. Tests revealed alcohol consumption at more than basic drunk driving levels. Police learned of Takamiyagi’s actions from a telephone report describing a taxi driving aimlessly up and down residential streets near the Naha gardens.

The arrest came in the middle of an anti-drunk driving campaign by Okinawa police agencies.

Saturday’s drunk driving arrest is only the latest round of problems for Takamiyagi. Police arrested him in November for drunk driving, leaving officials wondering why the man was even driving a taxi. They say it’s proof people just don’t seem to learn.
