Drunk drivers mar holiday weekend

Date Posted: 2007-01-08

Okinawa Prefecture Police were out in force during the New Year’s weekend, but their presence didn’t stop drivers from driving drunk.

A drunk driver in Nago City got plenty of police attention Saturday night when he crashed his car into a taxicab, sending it ricocheting into a second taxi. Kouta Maeda admitted to police he “was drinking beer” before driving through the Ounan area of Nago City.

The 21-year-old businessman told police he thought he was driving carefully, but couldn’t navigate a curve, crossing into an opposing lane and into the head-on collision with a taxi. That taxi, in turn, crashed into a second taxi. Three passengers were in the initial taxi, while two were in the second. None were seriously injured.

Police repeated frustrations that “we campaign against drunk driving, but don’t understand why they will never learn.”
