Student trapped in a Yui-rail elevator

Date Posted: 2006-12-28

A frightened Naha City teen spent a traumatic half-hour trapped inside an elevator at Akamine Yui-rail Station before managing to open a door.

The girl was trapped after the door closed and the elevator stuck on the first floor about 9:44am last Thursday. She was in communication with the Akamine Station chief, who talked her through escape procedures to open the door after 26 minutes. She was shaken, but uninjured.

The Schindler Company elevator is one of four in service at Akamine and Furujima Stations. The elevators were briefly taken out of service Friday for inspection. This was the fourth incident involving a Schindler elevator. In May 2004, September 2005 and again last June elevators became stuck, trapping riders for about one-half hour each time.

Okinawa Prefecture officials in the Urban Monorail Section say it appears dirt or sand may have built up in a channel on either the inside or outside of the elevator door, preventing the door from closing properly. They say safety devices worked as designed.
