Rabies shot tag saves lost dog

Date Posted: 2006-12-22

Hana, pet dog, disappeared from his home, and his owner, Mrs. Okuyara, couldn’t find him.

The dog is back home now, less than 24 hours later though, thanks to a rabies shot collar tag used by the Management Center for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to locate his master. “Hana is just like my child, Mrs. Okuhara said. “He’s been with me, like my child, since being born.” She had called the city office after the dog was missing, and filed a report. The city and her veterinarian both began searching for dogs in confinement, and found Hana.

Veterinary officials are using the incident to remind pet owners to register their animals at the nearest municipal office. They recommend dogs receive an annual rabies shot, something the Okinawa Medical Association says is now happening with only 52.2% of registered animals.

Center director Mr. Shimabukuro says “many dog owners are disappointed they can’t find their pets. There are many people who say the ‘made a mistake’ by not registering, but then it is too late.” He says he wants owners to remember their responsibilities.
