Student confesses to school arson

Date Posted: 2006-12-22

Naha City police have arrested a boy for setting a fire in a private school, but say they don’t think he acted alone.

The boy is charged with illegally entering a building and damaging property after he set the fire in Ueyama Naha private school. He reportedly used a lighter to set fire to tools used for science experiments.

Investigators say the junior high school student entered the science room about 9:50pm, then started the fire. The fire was extinguished within 30 minutes after firemen received a call from a neighborhood resident. Witnesses reported they’d seen the boy in the area at the time of the blaze.

He confessed after being asked to visit the police station. The fire is being treated as arson because fire sensors were operational that evening.
