Customer suffers scorpion sting in Nago apparel store

Date Posted: 2006-12-22

A female customer got a surprise of her life when she went to buy a pair of new jeans in Nago City.

After selecting a suitable pair she asked to try them on, and the sales clerk naturally agreed, and showed her the fitting room. However, shortly after a scream was head from the fitting room, and when the clerk entered the room to see what’s the problem, the customer, now obviously in pain, said that something inside the new pair of jeans had stung her.

When she then pulled the jeans off, a large scorpion fell on the floor. And when she tried to pick up the unfamiliar creature she was stung again on her finger.

The shop clerk called and ambulance and the hapless lady was taken to a hospital for treatment. She ended up staying for five days.

According to officials at Okinawa Prefecture Welfare and Health Center, the species was a Chinese bark scorpion, and they said that its sting is quite poisonous. But they assured that the species is not found in Okinawa.

According to the apparel store, they had imported jeans and other apparel from China last September and October with the Nago store receiving the shipment on Oct. 20.

The incident happened on Oct. 26, but was not made public until Monday this week.
