Local boxer latest to make headlines

Date Posted: 2006-12-08

Nobuo Nashiro is on his way to becoming another Okinawa icon.

The 25-year-old boxer, whose father is from Motobu Town, is now the World Boxing Association Super Fly Weight champion after sweeping a 12th match at Osaka last weekend. Nobuo defeated Mexican Edward Garusia 3-0 to win the champion’s belt and trophy.

He joins professional golfer Ai Miyazato of Higashi Village, and Okinawan Kurara Chibana, who captured the Miss Universe Grand Prize, making her the second best beauty pageant winner in the world.

Nobuo lives in Nara Prefecture now, but Motobu Town considers him their own. His father Kenshi, 51, still calls Motobu Town his hometown. Motobu sent 30 supporters to the Osaka District Gym Saturday for the bout. Nobuo pulled out the win, despite taking a blow that split open the left eyelid. He had used Motobu Town as his training camp location.

The judges awarded the decision, welcomed by the screaming fans. Kenichi Tamayose, Okinawa aBoxing Fan Club Chairman, said “the bout was hard. The first defender usually loses, but Nobuo won. He should become a new record holder, outdoing current world champion Yokou Gushi.”

Motobu residents say Nobuo “is our star, and we are proud of him.”
