Local engineer unit wins volunteer service award

Date Posted: 2006-12-01

Okinawa’s 9th Engineer Support Battalion has earned the President’s Volunteer Service Award in recognition of its volunteer service.

Eleven members of the battalion’s Key Volunteer Network were honored by III Marine Corps Expeditionary Force and Marine Corps Bases Japan. The Camp Hansen based winners earned the award by meeting a set hourly service guideline set by the PSVA, amassing 3,190 hours of volunteer service in 2006 alone. “The Key Volunteer Network serves 9th ESB by providing spouses with everything from a battalion newsletter to a support network helping cope with family crises,” says KVN coordinator Gina Gray. “And that support stretches even to cover dog-sitting for a family on emergency leave.”

The PSVA, established in 2003 by President George W. Bush in conjunction with the USA Freedom Corps, promotes volunteer service. 9th ESB Commander Lt. Col. Mark Menotti says this PSVA award “recognizes individuals and families who have answered that call. America’s volunteers work to make our communities stronger and safer,” he says, “and we are especially proud of our volunteers who’ve made volunteer service a central part of their lives.”
