Loans boost interest in agricultural business

Date Posted: 2006-11-17

A new loans guarantee program is spawning interest in companies investing in the agriculture industry.
An explanation of the Exception Corporation Loan Business is attracting companies willing to lease agricultural lands. At least four of Okinawa’s towns and cities are now arranging to support the companies. They will help choose places where the land has been lying idle, and decide on ideas how to best utilize the lands.

The Exception Corporation Loan Business is a special system introduced three years ago, taking effect in limited areas. It was expanded Japan-wide in September 2005. A total of 173 corporations in 80 cities and towns have joined the new program, but none from Okinawa.

Of the 100 companies already working, 6% said they were builders. Many others are in the food processing or cultivation business with organic foods or rice.
