Kadena Town considers dropping English classes

Date Posted: 2006-11-17

A Kadena Town program to teach English to residents is in danger of the budget shortfalls axe.

The ten-year program offers foreign language classes to citizens, with 76 residents using the classes this year. Of those, 65 completed the course. At least 23 studied English, while others took Information Technology business classes. This year’s budget is ¥51,000,000, and city officials are worried that money is too tight for continuing.

Kadena Town Mayor Atsusame Miyagi says “It’s about time to think about the value of the classes. We have to think about this.” A concern is that the classes, while popular, offer no certification papers, diplomas or degrees. Miyagi is asking citizens what they think about the classes, what have they learned, do the classes help, and how can they be better. From the answers, he hopes to better advise the town office.

In the meantime, new classes registration has been suspended.
