Village dog learns Buddhist prayers

Date Posted: 2006-11-10

There are dogs who learn to do tricks, and there are dogs who are real learners.

A dog in Ogimi Village is one of the latter, following his mistress around the home and mimicking her actions. In this case, Hena Oshiro, a 102-year-old grandmother, has seen the maltese animal join her at the family altar each morning as she prays.

Fuu-Chan, the dog, joined the family four years ago but began his unusual behavior two years later in 2004. He began sitting alongside Oshiro at the altar, sitting quietly while she meditated.

He then began to seemingly pray himself, sitting with both front paws crossing his chest as he stared at the altar, bowing his head and closing his eyes as his mistress does. “He makes my day, every day,” says Oshiro. “He gives me healing.” The dog even sleeps with his mistress, and is the talk of the Ogimi Village Nerome area.
