White Beach Festival perfect for holiday weekend

The White Beach Festival 2006 is being billed as a fun-filled day for the whole family.

The semi-annual event running Friday through Sunday at the east coast U.S. Navy base features plenty of music and dance, boat rides, food and entertainment vendors and even a clown show to make the Veterans Day holiday weekend a leisurely one for military families and the Okinawa community.

White Beach Festival 2006 is sponsored by Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

Gates open daily at noon, with virtually non-stop entertainment center stage from 1pm Friday through 9pm Sunday. The festival is open noon to midnight Friday and Saturday, and noon to 10pm on Sunday.

Eight bands team with eisa and daiko groups, plus break dancers, to keep everything lively for visitors. Banana boat rides will run daily noon to five oıclock, and the festival clown will be at Kiddyland each evening 6~9pm.

Music, the international language, is what makes it all tick this weekend.

Friday opens with Zamami Brothers kicking out the oldies beginning at 1pm.

The 57 Chevyıs blues and oldies rock & roll band follows at 4pm, and rhythm and blues band Absence of Color performs the first of three festival shows 8:30~10:30pm.

Rock & roll launches Saturdayıs performances at 12:30pm with Power Station.

African music with Waraba is center stage at 4pm, followed by Tenryu Daiko at 7pm and wraps up with Absence of Color beginning at 8:30pm. Awkwards, a clown show, will entertain kids and adults alike with performances at 2:45 and 6:30pm.

Byron Jones and Friends, Okinawa performers known for traditional music across the islands, will include sanshin music, Taiko and ShiShi Dog open the Sunday performances at 1pm. Maji Red Ranger, a popular television animation character, meets and greets visitors twice on Sunday, at 2:30 and 5:40pm. SKF Break Dance Group twists and twirls starting at 3:30pm, followed by Ryukyu Buyo performing traditional Okinawa dances. Thereıs Heshkiya Eisa dance at 6:30pm, and Absence of Color winds everything up with its 8pm performance.
